I Quit

by Mary Anne on February 1, 2010

Wait, wait….

I mean…I don’t quit you, because sorta like Brokeback Mountain, “I can’t quit you…”, you know?

No, it’s another type of quit, as in today I quit my job. Remember that post a little while back about how I was going to take control of my life again and seek out things that made me happy and fulfilled?

Today was the first big step.

Just like in a relationship, sometimes you grow apart. Things that fit you once, no longer fit the way they used to in your life. And at that point, you owe it to yourself to move on which is sort of were I was when I wrote that last post about getting the old me back.

I thought about it all week. Agonized over it really. By the time the weekend rolled around, I had made up my mind and I felt so relieved. So I did what any soon to be unemployed person lacking common sense would do, I went out and bought myself a shiny new watch.

See?

All I can tell you is this was not a planned purchase, it was just one of those things that felt right at the moment.   And it continued to feel right…right up to the moment I walked into the house and my husband almost passed out at the site of it.    After addressing me as PDiddy Fiddy and asking if he had missed a lottery win or something along the way, I calmly explained to him that while yes….it is a large watch and it does give me sort of a FlavorFlav vibe…

…that it’s a cheap (sort of) knock off and not actually the Rolex or whatever it is he thought it was from a distance.

Crisis averted. No smelling salts involved.

Wait, where was I?   Oh yes, the job situation.

So before you think I’ve totally lost my mind and quit a perfectly good job in the middle of the nastiest recession in ages, I’m not completely crazy.   I’ve been getting ready for this for a while. The past three weeks have been a blur traveling the country…Chicago, San Francisco, NYC….I’ve seen it all. I’m not kidding when I tell you the site of an airplane now could actually incite hysterical screeching and Rainman type running in concentric circles on my part. The great news is I actually have a couple of really wonderful options for where to go next and will likely spend the next 24 hours pulling my hair out trying to make a decision.

And probably drinking copious amounts of wine…and possibly scotch.

When I finally do make my decision?   I’ll probably go celebrate with a nice pair of Choos…because that’s just how I roll, yo.

Wish me luck!

Whoa whoa whoa lady! I did not see this coming! You sly thing you! Congratulations, it sounds like you put a lot of thought into it and that you’re feeling great about your decision.

I definitely think some retail celebration is in order. With pictures.

Congratulations! That was one of the best decisions I’ve made (though mine included staying home with The Maniacs).

For the record, I bought myself an iPhone to celebrate.

Quitting jobs (especially good, secure ones) always takes guts and so many put off making the right decision, so well done you. Hope these options work out and drink a glass of wine in celebration for me won’t you?

WOW! That is so awesome I might go out and buy me some Choos, too! Go, girl!

BTW, you would totally rock that big clock a la Flava Flav…you are a helluva lot better lookin’! ;)

You have no idea how envious I am that you have that ability, that choice, that freedom.

Good luck, my friend. From the bottom of my heart, good luck.

24 DCUrbanDad February 2, 2010 at 10:20 am

Holy hell congrats!!!!

Cannot wait to hear what you do next.

25 Keely February 2, 2010 at 10:36 am

Well, as long as they’re *concentric* circles.

Seriously, congratulations! I’m jealous…even of the big honkin’ watch.

26 Kristin February 2, 2010 at 10:38 am

Choos are a fabulous way to roll. I know I’d be hittin’ up some Loubs in no time flat if I were you! Ah ha ha

27 LiteralDan February 2, 2010 at 11:32 am

Well, that really is quite a big watch. I bet I could even read a watch like that without glasses. So that’s something.

And congratulations! Your next move should be to hole up in your studio and drop an album on us all as soon as possible. The people demand it!

28 Someone from your company February 2, 2010 at 11:40 am

As someone who knows where you’re leaving, I must say, good job. You’re one of many who wants out but one of few who has made the leap.

29 Suzy Voices February 2, 2010 at 1:02 pm

How wonderful for you!! The start of a new, fabulous journey!! Exciting!!!

30 Mo February 2, 2010 at 1:18 pm

You’re my hero! I’m dying to do the same thing but I’m just not there yet. Congratulations and good luck!

31 pamela February 2, 2010 at 2:31 pm

You are so much smarter than flavaflav. have you even *seen* that show with him and brigitte nielsen going all googoo over each other and then suddenly, out of completely nowhere, going all manic on each other and beating the living shat out of one another?

There are so many reasons why you are better than Flava Flav. Maybe I’ll write a post.

32 The Lawyer Mom February 2, 2010 at 3:15 pm

Fill us in on the aftermath following your announcement!

And fill us in on where you got that watch!

33 Working Mommy February 2, 2010 at 4:54 pm

Congrats on such a huge step – I think ;)

37 lynn @ human, being February 3, 2010 at 11:36 am

sometimes you just have to leap and trust the net will appear. Good lesson for those of us who cling to everything with fingernails dug in.

Woot! Life Adventures!

38 Amo February 3, 2010 at 3:21 pm

This post touched a special place for me. I too am trying to make a big, life-altering decision right now..

The schools have been closed for 3 days due to snow and all I’m asking is a 5 minute head start before you call DCS.

Oh look – there’s another post to read. (one of the perks of being hideously behind on your reader)
