It’s Tough To Be A Fish In This House

by Mary Anne on January 20, 2010

So you know we have pets.   We have Mary Bailey, the uppity cat as well as Mr. Potter, the slovenly fat and sometimes corn chip smelling pug.

Did you know we also have fish?   We have several but recently we have one less than we did before.   Chloe the fish made her journey to the great sea on the other side (via the toilet) not too long ago.

Chloe was a good fish.  She belonged to Miss G and was a happy little beta fish that was brightly striped and appeared to have a really happy disposition.   She’d flip around whenever we walked in as opposed to Mr. C’s fish, Stripes, who basically looked at us like, “Great to see you and all but…where the hell are my food pellets?” whenever we walked in.   I swear to you, I think Chloe smiled at me one time when I walked in. And possibly blew a kiss.

Miss G loved Chloe.   She loved that she was a “girl fish” (or at least we think she was since she was sort of pinkish purple…which no boy fish would be caught with those colors, right?)    She loved that Chloe stayed in her room and she would talk and sing to her to keep her entertained in her little bowl.

We chose the beta fish because at the pet store they told us that beta fish are really hard to kill.

They don’t know my daughter.

So like I said, Chloe seemed to like everything and she lived happily in her little bowl for several months before we found the one thing Chloe did not like.

A bubble bath.

Much to our shock, one day The Man walked in and found her looking like this….only with bubbles on top.

**Note: Not real Chloe fish, this is a google fish. Also, you may not want to search dead fish floating as the results can be somewhat…um…gnarly.**

L

(…and no, I don’t know what this L is in the middle of the page other than a special gift you can’t get rid of from Word Press…ugh…)

From what we could gather based upon our post mortem interrogation of Miss G, Chloe looked like she needed a bath.   She had been in that same water for quite a while after all.   Miss G decided that since she loves nothing more than a good bubble bath, perhaps Chloe would enjoy that as well.  (I’m not sure but I think the crowning touch here in this little unintentional fish-icide may have been the fact that disinfectant watermelon scented hand soap was the weapon of choice, though without a coroners report, we can never be sure.)

Needless to say, we won’t be buying another fish for Miss G for a while and currently are investigating how a couple of the tiny frogs in the larger fish tank have come to find themselves without all of their limbs.    Yet another mystery in the making and one that we suspect involves the cat.

RIP Chloe, you were a fine fish indeed.

Odds are good that Chloe died from embarrassment, seeing as how the poor fish was almost certainly a male. Named Chloe. Who was pink and purple. (Or, looking at that list, maybe he hopped into the bathtub on his own?)

Female bettas are typically much less colorful than males, and even if you get lucky and find one with a decent hue, her fins are much smaller and less showy than those of her male counterparts. Most pet stores only offer the males for sale anyway. Females usually have to be acquired through a breeder or by special request.

I know you probably didn’t need to know all that, lol, but I just finished reading about five different betta care books so the knowledge is still fresh in my head. (I was wondering if they were sturdy enough to survive my three year old, my cat, and my sometimes lackluster pet care. They’re not.)

That’s so funny I’ve just writted about the very same thing – aren’t fishes supposed to be the EASY pet option?

3 Irish Gumbo January 21, 2010 at 4:30 am

That watermelon scented hand soap is dangerous stuff.

Goodbye, Chloe, we hardly knew ye, but you seemed a fine fish, indeed!

Fish don’t like Christmas candy either; my baby sister managed to kill an entire tank of them when she decided THEY would like that “ribbon” Christmas candy far more than SHE did and dumped an entire bowl of it into the tank (she was about 2 at the time, so this had to have been 35 years ago).

We have a fish tank now, and we’re tired of replacing fish – little buggers are positively suicidal – so I think we’ll be getting rid of it soon.

Poor Chloe. Well, she had a good life, no? My daughter has a beta fish and I don’t know how it stays alive. She forgets to feed it for days. She’s 15 so it’s totally in her hands. It’s over a year old.
And your cat is amputating the frog limbs?? I shouldn’t laugh but he does have gourmet taste, huh?

6 justmakingourway January 21, 2010 at 6:58 am

I know I shouldn’t be laughing…but the whole bubble bath death (by watermelon hand soap, no less) is priceless!

We once put a beta in a tank with a more aggressive fish and soon noticed all the lovely long fins on the beta were decidedly shorter. Oops.

Better than flushing your bunnies down the toilet because you thought they needed a bath…I didn’t do it, but my gma did…she loves telling that story!!

What character was “Chloe” in It’s a Wonderful Life?

9 middle-aged-woman January 21, 2010 at 7:37 am

Poor Chloe. Poor Miss G. This story will live on, though, and be retold in perpetuity. Trust me on this.

Also, come see me, because I have tagged you with a meme, just to show off that I actually know you IRL. I got the Mayor, too.

One of my boys received a goldfish as a “prize” at a fair. $80 worth of equipment later, we went through three goldfish in six months.

The $80 worth of equipment went into the attic.

It did come in handy when Stretch needed to house a reptile for a month for a BS badge, though.

Um – I think the frog thing disturbs me the most. Poor Chloe. I guess you really can be killed with kindness.

12 cassie January 21, 2010 at 12:23 pm

The image I have of your daughter in my head is cracking me up. Between the damaged candle and dead fish I just cant picture this little michevous girl walking around the world. Kind of like Dennis The Mennis but sweet and girly.

I am laughing like a fool right now.

13 Michele January 21, 2010 at 12:41 pm

Poor Chloe. A fish who died of clean living. Literally.

Ah, the “logic” of our young children…and the results of their logic.

Poor kid. Poor fish.

Oh honey, our kitty ate our Beta Fishy, Master-P. That thing lived for three years before the likes of Mabel got to him. I was very upset when we discovered the empty tank. Even more so when we found the contents of Mabel’s stomach on the kitchen floor. Seems that Master-P had the last laugh and upset her tummy and she threw him up. For Henner’s birthday Reese bought him a new fish tank (reinforced, kid and cat proof, velcroed to a dresser) and a new fish….Gunshooter. (Our boy is sort of going through a western phase right now.)

15 Emtenster January 21, 2010 at 4:33 pm

We had a beta fish that lived for over 4 years in my daughter’s bathroom! He died a happy death, probably just tired of watching Laura get ready in the mornings!

16 Michele January 21, 2010 at 6:30 pm

Miss G – you and I are kindred spirits. I too am banned from having fish. I show my love with food. A lot of food.

17 Keely January 21, 2010 at 7:51 pm

I’m actually kind of surprised that killed a betta. I had two of those things for some reason, and I was TRYING to kill them. Eventually they expired of old age.

Although I didn’t try washing them.

18 Lynn @ human, being January 21, 2010 at 8:24 pm

When I was a kid, we had a big fish tank. Our black mollys had babies, and my parents separated them out with the mom into a smaller tank. I was very interested in the babies, so much that I

[oh god this is horrible]

picked them out of the tank one-by-one and squished them to death.

I’m still traumatized 37 years later.

19 vodkamom January 22, 2010 at 6:03 am

sniff, sniff. Do I smell fish?

20 MommyLisa January 22, 2010 at 8:58 am

My cousin did that to my beloved fish Mr. Patch on my birthday one year. I had gotten special shaped soaps for my birthday and when no one was looking he dropped them ALL in Mr. Patch’s bowl.

BOO!

He was only three or maybe two???

21 Connie @ Young and Relentless January 22, 2010 at 9:12 am

22 Ameena January 22, 2010 at 10:14 am

Poor Chloe! We have fish and I am scared to death that something will happen to them. How will I explain that to my 4-year-old?

23 The Lawyer Mom January 22, 2010 at 9:33 pm

Poor little Miss G. That bubble baths and fish don’t wash is a hard lesson to learn. Hope she’s recovered and is as bubbly as ever. And the fish? Err, well, then there’s the fish.

24 Cyndi January 30, 2010 at 8:30 am

Aw, so long Chloe! I must admit I was reading it closely to see what IAWL name you found for the fish – guessing Miss G isn’t as big a fan? Great (as fish-icides go) picture, btw :-)
