Christmas Card Comeupance

by Mary Anne on December 23, 2009

Christmas cards are a big deal around here. Each year I struggle with the picture selection, the theme and tone, the caption…my God, it gives me a nervous breakdown. Every year though I manage to pull it off and get calls from friend and relatives telling me they loved my card.

Witness the history here:

Christmas card 12003:   Merry Kissmas

2004:  Missing in action, though I distinctly remember it being cute…

Christmas card 32005:   Be Good!   You Never Know Who’s Watching!

Christmas card 22006 New Years Card (Because I totally missed the boat on Christmas…)

Tiny Bubbles

Christmas card 42007:   Joy to the World

I can explain2008:  Naughty or Nice?  You Decide!

This year was a real struggle.   I’ve been slammed at work with no time to think about Christmas and to be honest, work has not been all that much fun…which is to say, I found myself with sort of a Scrooge mentality facing the daunting task of holiday cards this year.   Until I remembered this picture which summed up the entire year for both me and the kids.

Presenting the 2009 Stiletto Family Christmas Card….

Christmas card 5

Heck yeah!  I thought for sure I had pulled it off again…the most awesome Christmas card expressing not only my feelings for the upcoming holiday but also providing a laugh and a look back at the type of year it had been.   Perfection, I tell you….perfection.

Until I got this:

Christmas card 6

Those two beautiful little girls are my nieces.   And the one in the middle?   Is Taylor Swift.     One more time, Taylor Swift. I can’t compete with that!   It was bad enough when my other beautiful little niece got to meet The Jonas Brothers

christmas 7

Trust me when I tell you I never heard the end of it from my two little angles when they saw this picture.    Between the Taylor Swift Christmas Card and the Jo Bros meet and greet, it would appear I need to step up my efforts next year in the tween stalking department.     Or, I just need to keep my kids away from pictures of their cousins who are obviously having a better time than they are….it’s a toss up to be honest.

I’m going to take the rest of the week off to focus on pulling the holiday together, lots of cooking, wrapping and possibly explaining left to do when my kids see that card.

Hope you all have a very Merry Christmas filled with great food, family, laughter and love!

xo!

While yours was very cute and summed up this year perfectly I have to say that you’ll need to step up your game in the Christmas photo competition. Because I think you are right; 2 Jonas brothers and a Taylor beats a pair of strangling kids.

I really think that yours is better than the Swift or Jo Bros cards…only because it conveys true to life actual feelings…the other two are once-in-a-lifetime sort of things that just don’t happen every day. LOL! Happy holidays!

I like yours better, seriously and btw: how the hell did those kids get so close to any of those folks?

Merry Christmas my love

You need call a do-over.
I’m sure the rules didn’t include anything about celebrities having to be involved.

Are you kiddin’ me?? You win – hands down! All those “themes”?!?! Besides – in a few years who is even gonna know who the Jonas Brothers are (right now – I’m not even sure who they are – but hey, I got a teenage boy…that’s my excuse) – so they’ll be like “who’s these guys in the picture with Cousin Sally?” And then you will be vindicated.

I honestly like yours better. This is despite the fact that not only am I ragingly jealous that your niece met the Jonas Brothers, but JOE IS TOUCHING HER SHOULDER!!

Regardless, yours are better. I’d be all, “Hey, when did Taylor Swift join our family?” if I got that particular one (and, OK, “WHY IS JOE TOUCHING HER SHOULDER AND NOT MINE?!?!” in that other one), but lady, creativity trumps them all, and you’ve got it!

Hope you and yours have a truly merry Christmas!

Next year: The Stiletto Children prepped out in pink and green, and flanking Jen Lancaster on the MOMA couch.

Love ‘em! We had something similar last year and everyone liked the honest one better than the posed versions ;-) Merriest of Christmases to you and yours – may 2010 be a wonderful year!

Truth in advertising: yours still rocks.

Then again, I’m not a tween girl. At least, i don’t think I’m a tween girl…

Merry Christmas Queen Stiletto Mom!

See, now, if I got yours I’d “get” it. If I got one of the others I’d smile politely and change the subject before my ignorance was revealed. I have no idea who those people are.

So I like yours much better. Merry Christmas!

Do I get a vote here? Oh wait…it’s my blog, I do!! Yay for ownership!

I’m going to have to say that I willingly concede defeat this year on cool Christmas cards because no matter how much I love my cards, my kids will NEVER look back on them and think they are as cool as the ones their cousins sent out.

You know, because they aren’t….no matter how much I appreciate you guys throwing me a bone here. :)

Merry merry,
Mary Anne

Merry Christmas, Mary Anne! I did a double take on Taylor Swift, but I like yours better!

That knap-sack gig’em was absolutely, totally, amazingly perfect! Pure genius.

17 Kate Coveny Hood December 24, 2009 at 8:38 am

Oh – I prefer yours. Anyone can photoshop in a celebrity if they need one (although I know those are real). But yours shows true creativity.

Merry Christmas!

18 DCUrbanDad December 24, 2009 at 1:14 pm

Eh, who is Taylor Swift?

19 Liz December 24, 2009 at 1:27 pm

LOVE the peace one…yeah, way better than the JoBros or Taylor.

20 rachel-asouthernfairytale December 24, 2009 at 1:36 pm

Honestly, I like your card better :-)

I think it’s kinda cheating to put a card with a celebrity.. and sorta braggy :-)

Your cards are gorgeous and brilliant! I love them!! I have NEVER (can you believe it) NEVER done a Christmas Card

21 Essie December 24, 2009 at 5:27 pm

Hi, I clicked in here from somewhere…
I love your beautiful card pictures. Wow, they really are gorgeous!

Next time I would definitely pre-screen any cards coming in before the kids see them.

22 Meli December 24, 2009 at 6:17 pm

I like your card best. But the Taylor Swift & Jo Bro cards are pretty awesome.

23 Bobbi December 26, 2009 at 3:54 pm

I love this year’s card, it’s awesome!

24 Jen December 27, 2009 at 2:40 pm

I suppose no one can compete with cards that have the tween heartthrobs on them. Although, I must say that your card had much more character. Hope you had a wonderful holiday.

25 Jules December 27, 2009 at 7:32 pm

Love ur wit!!!!

26 Ellie December 28, 2009 at 8:05 am

Your card is *so* much cooler than that ol’ — I mean young — Taylor Swift girl. I love it.

27 Rhea January 2, 2010 at 8:09 pm

You have some absolutely ADORABLE Christmas cards! This year’s was hilarious though.

I feel so guilty I didn’t send out a Christmas card this year. I love doing one. But I just had to cut back somewhere. Maybe I’ll send out an Easter card or something instead.
